selecting a qualified and appropriate consultant for health and safety issues
There are many factors to consider when looking for and selecting a qualified and appropriate consultant for health and safety issues.
There are many factors to consider when choosing a professional consultant. These might include professional certifications (one must have recognized credentials to be viewed as an expert if there is the potential for litigation), demonstration of experience and knowledge through project portfolio, references by past customers, past experience within your organization, cost for services provided, the type of project, and the product you are looking for from the consultant.
Before choosing a consultant, you must first;
1. define the issue or project,
2. its scope,
3. any constraints
and you should do so as thoroughly as possible. If you are vague as to why you want the consultant and what you specifically need from them, the consultant will have difficulty addressing your concerns. A consultant can address many problems; do so thoroughly, and without project limits, do so at great expense. Without good project definition however, the issue you were really interested in to begin with, may never be adequately addressed.
If general health and safety concerns exist, you are often best served by looking for a qualified consultant with appropriate experience in your particular setting. You probably don’t want to instruct the consultant on “industry basics” and be charged for the time to come up to speed on fundamental aspects.
